Dolois country and Bresse Jurassienne

Stretching gently to the south of Dole, Bresse is one of the most characteristic regions of the Jura and without a doubt, its most colorful: the green of its forests, the blue of its ponds, the golden tide during the harvest season, the ochres of the vineyards which point to the horizon in autumn, warm your heart and your spirit.

It’s a region of rich and generous land and gastronomy: “Yellow” wine and Bresse chicken, cider and carp filets, gaudes biscuits (grilled corn meal).

To the east, small roads leaving the ancient capital of the county thrust into the majestic forest of Chaux whose columns remind one of a temple.

This forest was once the center of intense activity of which there remain few ruins and many legends that the impassioned still recreate and live again. On the edge of the forest, the calm banks of the Loue give a unique character to the Val d'Amour which Marcel Aymé, a child of the region loved to tell the secrets...

For nearly a millennium, the prosperity of Salins was linked to the channelling and the exploitation of the salt sources. Visit the underground galleries and the hydraulic pumping system from the 18th and 19the centuries. This activity in Salines ceased in 1962.

The Champagnole Archeological Museum

Its Gallo-Roman collections evoke the daily and religious life of the Mont Rivel sanctuary. A rich collection of furnishings from the Merovingian cemeteries illustrates the life of the Burgondes. In this museum, archaeological collections of local interest are conserved, restored, exposed and enhanced. The majority of the collections are the result of nearly 30 years of volunteer archaeological digs (C. Mercier, F. Leng). Certain donated objects discovered fortuitously have also recently been added to the museum’s collection.
The permanent exposition presents the daily life of the rural populations who lived during the first 8 century of our era (period Gallo-Roman and Merovingian).

THE REST AREA OF THE JURA

An elegant display of the Jura: the rest area of the Jura located along the autoroute A39 presents an unexpected collection of architectural monuments!

Its buildings (Porte de Boumeville, Pavillion of Circles) directly inspired by the projects of the idealistic 15th century architect, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, who conceived of the awe-inspiring Royale d'Arc-et-Senans Salt marsh.

To visit the rest area of the Jura is to discover the Jura a different way: surprising and cultural, artistic and gastronomic!

It’s to find available, in the Boutique, all of the products (toys, wines, eyeglasses, books...) that make the reputation of the Jura. It is also to have access to all the practical information at the "Point Infos" of the Departmental Committee of Jura Tourism (Comité Départemental du Tourisme du Jura). Finally, and more practically, you can fill up your gas tank after having filled your mind with beautiful images of the Jura.

Access: by the l'A39, from the tollbooths of Dole-Choisey,
Bersaillin or Beaurepaire, but also, directly by road from Bletterans or Arlay

THE WINES OF THE JURA (AOC: Arbois, Côtes du Jura, l'Etoile, Chateau-Chalon)

Bouteille Vin jaune Chateau ChalonThe vineyards of the Jura go back to ancient times. Before the phylloxera crisis, the region had more than 40 varieties on 20000 hectares. Today, the surface is de 1,850 hectares, spread over 4 geographical Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (Arbois, Côtes du jura, l'Etoile, Château-Chalon), plus 2 AOC products, Macvin du Jura and Crémant du Jura.
The wines come from the following 5 grape varieties: Chardonnay and Savagnin (white), Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir (red).

An exceptional wine: « Yellow » wine. Grape variety: Savagnin.
The grapes are harvested late and, after creating a white wine, the aging takes place in oak barrels for a minimum of 6 years and 3 months. As the barrel is permeable, a bit of the wine evaporates (the angels’ portion), and no topping off is done. A veil of yeast develops on the surface of the wine. This aging method, specific to the Jura allows the wine to acquire its flavours and its taste of yellow, characteristic of walnut, almond, spice, apple, curry... for a unique wine, a unique bottle: the Clavelin contains 62 cl of “Yellow” wine. “Yellow” wine is produced in the 4 appellations. Château-Chalon is the cradle, the Clavelin of this last is distinguished by an escutcheon at the base of the neck.

The Jura Wine Route: an itinerary with character from Salins-les-Bains to Saint-Amour, a grouping of wine towns and villages bunched together at the base of the sunny hillsides, cover the Jura Massif Mountains with vines. For nearly 80 km, chateaux, abbeys, magnificent churches, stately estates, and more than 250 wine producers are still witness today. The wines of the Jura were also a research subject for Louis Pasteur, enabling him to study the mysteries of alcoholic fermentation. It was in Arbois that this scientist did his work, the basis of modern oenology.
